The HRSA Poison Center Grant will allow the Florida Poison Information Center – Miami (FPIC-M) to develop strategies to support poison prevention activities, provide high-quality treatment recommendations (guidance) to callers to the Poison Help Line®, collect data for the National Poison Data System (NPDS) and to inform public health and emergency preparedness response to meet the accreditation requirements of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. This grant will fully fund one public health educator, and partially fund a certified poison information specialist and the medical and managing director. The grant will also provide support for several new prevention and education initiatives, specifically for the residents of South Florida not reached by traditional methods due to language, cultural or economic factors. The key goals of this grant proposal are to increase poison center utilization by the public and healthcare professionals in the South Florida region, the most populous and most culturally and economically diverse county served by the FPIC-M. The grant also supports the establishment of partnerships with trusted institutions serving underserved communities to maximize the reach of outreach efforts over time. For healthcare professionals, the grant will allow the FPIC-M to increase medical director involvement in the care of patients with the most severe poisonings. We believe that by providing our hospitals with timely and complete treatment recommendations through more frequent consults, toxicological bulletins, and a choice of continuing education offerings, we will increase utilization -- and ultimately improve outcomes and reduce the costs associated with poisoned patients. During the 5-year grant period, FPIC–M staff will evaluate a variety of process and outcome measures to monitor our progress toward fulfilling the stated goals and objectives. Through these approaches, we hope to successfully meet t he requirements for poison center re-accreditation in 2030.
