The New Mexico Poison & Drug Information Center (NMPDIC) is the sole poison center serving the State of New Mexico. Services include high-quality and locally informed guidance for poisonings, follow-up when indicated, and poison prevention initiatives. By being available 24/7 via the telephone, the NMPDIC is able to respond to New Mexico’s health needs of addressing poisonings (one of New Mexico’s leading cause of unintentional death). One of the greatest barriers to maintaining 24/7 service at the NMPDIC is funding for staffing. A second barrier is adequate funds for poison prevention materials utilized in community outreach efforts in urban areas. Federal Funds from the HRSA grant will help address these barriers and will support the NMPDIC’s ability to fulfill HRSA expectations and requirements listed below. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Poison Control Centers Program’s stated purpose is to 1) provide high-quality guidance and treatment recommendations for poisonings and toxic exposures; 2) support poisoning prevention activities; 3) collect case toxic exposure surveillance data; 4) contribute to public health preparedness and response. To meet these goals the NMPDIC will: 1) Maintain 24/7 service. 2) Strengthen call-handling through quality assurance project to provide high-quality treatment recommendations. 3) Support poisoning prevention activities in urban areas surrounding Albuquerque. 4) Improve data entry for submission to NPDS. The NMPDIC will maintain service to the State of New Mexico 24-hours a day 7-days a week, 365-days a year by maintaining an adequate staff of specialists in poison information. The Guideline Process Coordinator will coordinate the efforts towards maintaining and reviewing NMPDIC guidelines annually. The Data Evaluation Coordinator will identify, design, and present two quality assurance projects each year with the goal of ass essing any guideline utilization discrepancies and resolving any NPDS discrepancies. The Medical Director and Assistant/Associate Medical Directors will oversee guideline review processes and maintain the healthcare case quality assurance project, identifying medical management issues through case review during daily rounds.
