Applicant Name: National Capital Poison Center Project Director: Nicole Reid, ABAT Contact Info: 202-362-3867; reid@poison.org Web address: www.poison.org In 2023, in the Washington, DC metro area alone, 45,482 people called the Poison Center for expert medical guidance in poison emergencies and for answers to their questions about poison. This includes 37,609 human poison exposure calls, 6,885 information calls, and 988 animal poison exposures calls. Over the past 43 years, about 1 in every 4 people in the DC metro area has relied on the Poison Center as a trusted, expert public health resource. In addition, nearly 1 million people have used webPOISONCONTROL®, an online triage tool for guidance for suspected poisonings developed by the National Capital Poison Center. Poisoning outcomes are better when patients receive immediate, expert medical treatment advice – precisely the service provided by the National Capital Poison Center. The Poison Center provides free medical guidance in poison emergencies, all day, every day, to everyone in the DC area who calls for help. This critical public health resource improves the quality of life for the community by ensuring that no one suffers needlessly from poisoning. Grant funds will be used to provide 24/7 medical advice to callers with poison emergencies or questions while ensuring there are no barriers to the services provided, that services reach all demographic segments of the area served, and that both the public and health care professionals have ready access to this medical resource. Funds will also be used to prevent poisonings before they occur and to contribute to the public health mission of protecting the public with the use of poison control data and by being proactive in disaster preparedness. Project evaluation will be process oriented and success will be measured through analysis of poison exposure data and records of prevention activities. All processes will be measured in term s of their contribution towards the Poison Center’s overarching goals: improving the quality of life for the residents of the DC metro area and ensuring that no one suffers needlessly from poison.
