The Kentucky Poison Control Center of Norton Children’s Hospital (KPCC) is the only nationally certified poison control center in Kentucky and is designated by the state department of health and cabinet for health and family services to provide poison control services to the commonwealth. We have done so since 1954. Our mission is to reduce the morbidity and mortality from poisoning in the Commonwealth, and to support the state of Kentucky through information dissemination, disaster preparedness, and provision of accurate and comprehensive data. We keep nearly 70% of our callers at home, reduce length of stay of admitted poisoned patients, and decrease hospital admissions. Estimated annual savings to the state of Kentucky are considered to be greater than $29 million, a return on investment of $19 for every $1 spent by the state to support the program. The support from this grant will continue to supplement funds for operations and ensure that we continue to meet the standards required for national accreditation through robust staffing, quality recommendations, continued partnership with state agencies for public health and preparedness, and outreach to provide poison prevention education.
