The goal of the Poison Control Centers Program for the Mississippi Poison Control Center (MPCC) is to develop critical personnel and resources to allow the MPCC to provide high quality poison information and operations 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. The MPCC is designated as the primary poison center and provides services to the 82 counties of Mississippi, which encompasses a total population of approximately 2.96 million people. The MPCC assists in the treatment of over 16,000 cases of poison exposures in Mississippi every year. The MPCC is the state’s center for knowledge and expertise on the potentially harmful effects of substances. It provides education and health care guidance to the public, healthcare, and other agencies. It participates in poison prevention, awareness, and education throughout the state. The MPCC works closely with the Mississippi State Department of Health and other agencies on critical poison-related healthcare issues, as well as, monitoring for potential disease outbreaks within the state of Mississippi. The program will help support staff development and fill personnel gaps that are important to the functioning of the center. Through ongoing continuing education, the MPCC personnel can provide high-quality, evidence-based education and healthcare guidance. The MPCC plans to continue to operate in a manner that meets our institutional guidelines for staff and client protection while providing timely, quality, and efficient service to the citizens of Mississippi.
