Project Title: Poison Center Support and Enhancement Applicant Organization: Louisiana Poison Center Address: 1455 Wilkinson Street, Shreveport, LA 71103 POPULATION TO BE SERVED: All residents of the state of Louisiana NEEDS: the Louisiana Poison Center aims to reduce the incidence, morbidity and mortality of poisoning, and the financial impact of exposures to individuals and institutions, by providing education (primary-prevention) and case management (secondary-prevention) for poison exposures to the 4.5 million people of Louisiana. In 2023, 57,483 calls came to the Poison Center from healthcare professionals and general public seeking information or for consultation regarding poisoned or overdosed patients. Availability of a 800 emergency hotline to reach the Poison Center improves access to expert advice for the entire the population of Louisiana, including those in rural locations that have limited access to health care. Poison Center service to all areas of Louisana acts to eliminate health disparities by giving options for care of poisoning emergencies other than overcrowded hospital emergency departments to many of the state’s disadvantaged population. Federal funding is necessary to continue to provide the full scope of poison center services to those in Louisiana who seek this specialized expert assistance to decrease the risk of poisoning exposures and avoidable morbidity, particularly among children and vulnerable people in Medically Underserved Areas. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES are to reduce the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of poisoning in Missouri, specifically by maintaining awareness of poison prevention and how to access and consult with the Poison Center through the national toll free number; preventing visits to healthcare facilities, and when appropriate managing in a home setting; providing treatment advice for to xic exposures to both the general public and to health care professionals that reduces the impact on the patient’s health and averts fatal outcomes; and continuously maintaining high-quality operations as evidenced by meeting accreditation criteria of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. PROPOSED SERVICES: Grant funding will be used to assure the salaries of key personnel to carry out day-to-day operations which support project objectives. Positions partially supported by grant funding are Director/Project Director and Nurse-SPI. General public callers to the Center will have their cases individually evaluated and managed by a nurse or pharmacist SPI and managed at home if feasible. Health professional callers will be offered comprehensive treatment recommendations for their poisoned or overdosed patients. Public education will target poison prevention and awareness and promote the use of the national toll free number. EVALUATION: Annual analysis of Poison Center data will show stability or increase in percent of callers using the national 800 number; the percent of general public callers whose exposure is safely managed at home; and provision of advice to the general public and specific treatment recommendations to health care professionals. Continuing self-assessment of operations against national accreditation criteria will demonstrate 100% compliance to assure high-quality health care from the Louisiana Poison Center.
