These services face unprecedented challenges as unintentional poisoning currently exceeds automobiles and guns as the #1 cause of injury death in Ohio and suicide attempts by self-poisoning have doubled in the adolescent population. The expertise needed is continually changing, requiring increased training and knowledge base for our specialists and an increased call acuity. Our program expense continues to increase and the need for poison center services continues to increase, while revenue to support poison centers has decreased. Proposed Services: The goals of the COPC are to implement our strategic plan that enables the COPC to better enhance its ability to respond to poison treatment and prevention needs. Some of the objectives that will be used to achieve these goals are: • Provide high quality guidance and treatment recommendations for poisonings and toxic exposures utilizing the national PoisonHelp line o Ensure that hotline personnel maintain or exceed current APC accreditation standards for experience and proficiency throughout the grant period o Maintain a quality assurance (QA) committee to asses and improve call handling performance and documentation o Oversee a schedule of routine training and professional development activi ties for students, residents, and COPC hotline personnel • Support poisoning prevention activities o Collaborate to develop strategic public education initiatives targeting all Ohioans o Increase public awareness and engagement within the service region o Promote utilization of Be Poison Smart outreach program in community agencies and schools • Collect toxic exposure surveillance data Project Abstract 2 Central Ohio Poison Center – Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Inc. Funding Opportunity: HRSA-24-045 o Provide complete, accurate and timely data used for real-time public health surveillance initiatives’ o Generate research to reduce the number of fatal or non-fatal poisonings, as well as increase understanding for improved treatment recommendations for poisonings • Contribute to public health preparedness and response o Ensure that on-call physician toxicologist coverage is always available and responsive o Collaborate with community and state partners Population to be Served: The COPC serves 64 counties in the central, northwest central and southeast regions of Ohio. The area served has a population of over 5.9 million residents (about 50% of Ohio’s 11.8 million residents). About half of this population is concentrated into two metropolitan areas (62% of the population served), but the remainder (50%) is widely dispersed over the vast remaining land area thus the resulting long driving distances may alter patterns of health care delivery
