CRNA Opioid Awareness & Family Recovery Project The Copper River Native Association (CRNA) is a Comprehensive Tribal Healthcare Organization serving five Ahtna Tribes – Cantwell, Kluti-Kaah, Gakona, Gulkana, and Tazlina. CRNA employs 130 professionals and is staffed with the only full-time medical doctor within 100 miles. CRNA is home to Primary Care, Behavioral Health, Wellness, Chiropractic and Dental Care clinics, as well as Child Development Services, Elder Services, and Social Services. Each department and clinic work together to provide complete patient-centered care. CRNA serves approximately 1184 tribal members across the Copper River region. As reported by a variety of self-report scales, approximately 78% of our adult and youth population has considered opioid misuse and 33% claim to have misused opioids. This is a reaction to despair in our communities. There are multiple social determinants of opioid use amongst our people. At CRNA, we believe the long-term health and welfare of our communities depends on CRNA to provide consistent and reliable access to quality services across all departments. With appropriate supports, our people can achieve community healing from opioid misuse. To help realize this vision, CRNA proposes the following aligned goal and three objectives that define the CRNA Opioid Awareness & Family Recovery Project. Goal: The Copper River Native Association will implement a locally designed and culturally appropriate prevention, treatment, recovery and aftercare program, the CRNA Opioid Awareness & Family Recovery Project, which will address mental health and substance abuse disorders for the Ahtna people of the Copper River Region. Objective 1: In Year 1 of the CRNA Opioid Awareness & Family Recovery Project, CRNA Behavioral Health Department will develop and implement a culturally aligned community awareness and education program that will inform and train community members in the five tribes we represent on how to recognize the signs of opioid misuse and overdose. Objective 2: By 2022, the CRNA Opioid Awareness & Recovery Family Project will significantly expand access to culturally aligned MAT services. Objective 3: By the end of the grant period, the CRNA Opioid Awareness & Family Recovery Project will build dynamic support systems to strengthen Native families by utilizing culturally aligned approaches. The primary outcomes of the project are that CRNA, families, youth and community members work together to keep our communities safe from opioid misuse, clients are able to access pathways to recovery through MAT, the stigma of MAT is mitigated through cultural awareness and supports, fewer opioid overdoses/deaths occur in our service area, and familial and community strength to help support resilience in our communities is enhanced.
