The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe reservation is comprised of three Districts over 160 non-contiguous rural miles that overlap Aitkin, Mille Lacs, and Pine Counties in east central Minnesota. Access to healthcare services in critical to good health. While primary care is available in all three districts at MLBO clinics, most specialty care services, such as endocrinology, optometry, and nephrology are referred to outside providers. Rural populations are more likely to have to travel long distances to access healthcare services, particularly specialist services. Barriers to accessing appropriate care can include transportation to care, travel time, transportation cost, and time away from the workplace. MLBO reservation is primarily rural based, the residents face a variety of barriers to accessing services from the Diabetes Program, including transportation to care, the ability to take time off of work to use such services, and stigma associated with conditions in rural communities, such as mental health or substance abuse.
