The Santa Ynez Valley is located in the rural valley of Santa Barbara County. Access to care within the valley continues to be increasingly difficult for patients, specifically pediatric, family practice, and specialty services. While native patients can receive their care here at Santa Ynez Tribal Health clinic, there are limitations to what is offered on site. Access to eye care and follow-up has been a long-standing issue for diabetic patients living in Santa Ynez and the surrounding areas. When comparing the compliance rates of annual diabetic retinal eye exams for Native Americans seen at the clinic from 2016 to 2022, there is an average of 38% of the patients that complete them. Utilizing SDPI funding, Santa Ynez Tribal Health clinic would like to hire a full time Optometrist to address this community need. SYTHC will also utilize the funding to continue to provide collaborative diabetic care and provide necessary supplies to assist patients in managing their health conditions. Over the 5-year funding period, we would expect to see better compliance with completing annual diabetic screenings and hopefully in-turn a better managed diabetic population.
