Special Diabetes Education and Prevention Program for Indians - CTCLUSI's Health & Human Services has been providing diabetes prevention education and services to their Tribal members and families since 1998 (24 years). Our Target Group of 288 participants was determined by the number of registered at-risk population in CTCLUSI's 5-county service area. CTCLUSI has provided glucose testing at many Tribal-sponsored events, such as the Tribal Annual Christmas Dinners, Elder Congregate Luncheons, and Tribal Family Gathering Dinners. An educational component is included, e.g., guest speakers, together with educational materials (pamphlets, diabetes-related articles), at these events. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we have had to think outside the box and hold virtual activities which were well received by our Tribal families. Some of those activities included: 1) Native Wellness Classes (7-week program) in collaboration with Cow Creek Indians regarding exercise, overall wellness, traditional health foods; 2) Native Food for Life Class with traditional foods; 3) Spring Break Camp, Summer Cultural Camp and Summer School where the topics were: a)how much sugar was in different foods with visual demonstrations, b) exercising through health, and c) sponsored foods specific for diabetes prevention; 4)Live Native Classes (6-week program) in collaboration with Oregon State University and Bay Area Hospital (our local hospital) Diabetic Department. Topics included applied nutrition, reversing diabetes, understanding diabetes and its risk factors, and a dental diabetes presentation by our Dental Clinic staff participating. Tribal families are encouraged to monitor their glucose levels, weight and blood pressure and referrals to health care providers are made when necessary. Health education and disease prevention is also offered in the Tribal monthly newsletter. CTCLUSI has Youth and Adult Fitness Programs that fund the use of fitness centers and other physical sports. Youth are encouraged to be active in their local Boys and Girls Club and school sports. We plan to continue these services for our Tribal members and their families and are hopeful to once again have in-person activities/events. However, in the alternative, we are prepared to continue with virtual activities. In addition, we are planning to contract with a dietitian who will consult about proper nutrition with Tribal members living in the CTCLUSI's 5-county service area who are diabetic or pre-diabetic.
