The Las Vegas Paiute Tribe provides health services at 1257 Paiute Circle Las Vegas, NV right in the heart of the Paiute reservation. Our program is to aid all Native Americans who are a member of a federally recognized tribe and a member of our clinic and a Clark County resident who may need support with their diabetes management.
Our Diabetes Program Coordinator provides Intensive Diabetes Case Management which includes meeting with the patients identifying what works best for them. The diabetes coordinator educates the patient on how to properly administer insulin to the injection sites. The Diabetes Coordinator explains to the patient the importance of all the appointments with every provider. The Diabetes coordinator also enforces the topic of why active participation is important to their self-care.
Our Behavioral health department engages with our patients by depression screening PHQ-9 and PHQ-2 questionnaires which usually leads up to more in depth conversations in encouraging behavior changes.
Our Nutrition Education department is held by a Licensed Dietitian (RDN). The Licensed Dietitian (RDN) will meet with the patients individually providing one-to-one nutrition education for each of the diabetic patients. Patients will be able to schedule one hour diabetes education appointments. The dietitian is a vital tool in the treatment of diabetes, they can discuss and educate patients on eating habits, portion control, carbohydrate intake and how to keep blood sugar levels in a target range. They also educate patients on the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and provide individualized education on how to achieve their goals. Physical activity is also discussed as a vital component of glucose and weight control.
We provide Podiatry services to our patients who are diabetic for many conditions including but not limited to antibiotic, neuropathic and fungal treatments. This assists the podiatrist and primary care providers in treating diabetic wounds, neuropathy and PVD, that plague our community. It also helps with the assessment of sensation and vascular status.
We also offer optometry services. Vision and ocular health are an integral part of diabetic care. Visual correction in a diabetic can be affected and changed by blood glucose variations and the medications used to control blood glucose. Vision can be affected by damage done to the ocular vascular and neurological systems by elevated blood glucose and expressed as diplopia or vision loss due to retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, and glaucoma.
Our dental department provides annual exams, x-rays, and cleanings to patients. Studies have shown that uncontrolled diabetes can affect the oral cavity, and cause gum disease. Studies have also shown that uncontrolled gum disease can lead to higher sugar levels. By providing the above services to patients on the diabetic grant we are helping control gum disease.
