Northeastern Tribal Health System (NTHS), Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI), Diabetes Self Management and Health Promotion Disease Prevention Project - Northeastern Tribal Health System (NTHS) Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) is a clinic based program that includes a community focus. The diabetes education program is accredited by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and three of the four educators are Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. In addition to education, foot exams and Joslin Vision Network (JVN) eye exams are provided at the program. Opportunities for fitness are strongly supported by the program which includes a wellness center with aerobic and strength training equipment, staffed by a Certified Personal Trainer, an outdoor walking track with outdoor exercise equipment and a playground. Disease prevention includes a diabetes prevention and hypertension management program offered in the education department along with management of weight and other risk factors for chronic disease. NTHS SDPI program works with many community partners to promote health through multiple ways for a variety of age groups including: health fairs, foot care clinics, nutrition and cooking classes, fitness activities, and a local farmer's market.
