Objective: The Zuni Healthy Lifestyles Program i.e. Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) has been providing community-based interventions for diabetes prevention and awareness since 1999. The mission statement for the Zuni Healthy Lifestyles Program is to "Improve the Health and Well-being of the people of Zuni by Promoting healthy living through cooperation and collaboration with other Tribal Health and Nutrition related programs, schools, Zuni Service Unit of Indian Health Services, community businesses and community members." The program will continue to accommodate individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and/or over and A1C of 9 or higher.
Research Method and Design: So far in 2022, the Zuni Indian Health Service Unit has served 7,734 of the Zuni Community, of which 1,658 are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes resulting in a prevalence rate of 21.8%. The Zuni Healthy Lifestyles Program has served 2,725 individuals of all ages, up to September 2022, which means the program served 35.2% of their Zuni community members. Many of the individuals that have been served by the Zuni Healthy Lifestyles Program within this year, are either diabetic,or pre-diabetic, or at risk for diabetes (defined as having a BMI Greater than or equal to 30 or A1C levels of 9 or higher).
Conclusion: The Zuni Healthy Lifestyles Program has closely evaluated each individual who has participated in the community events. The prevalence of Type II Diabetes still being high, the continuation of awareness, prevention, and management is necessary to improve the health of the Zuni community. With the continued promotion of healthy behaviors, health education, and physical fitness activities, case management, and community-wide interventions, the Zuni Healthy Lifestyles Program will continue to enhance the quality of life for the Zuni community.
