Laguna Life Long Wellness Program
The Pueblo of Laguna has a long tradition in embracing its cultural core values and beliefs. Respect and responsibility are two of the fundamental core values associated with the pueblo’s tradition in sustaining and improving the quality of life. These principals and traditions are the driving force in the pueblo’s efforts in addressing the health inequities, chronic diseases among the Laguna people. One of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the community is diabetes. Diabetes has a tremendous impact on individuals, families, and the community. Laguna Pueblo leadership has made it a priority to promote wellness and secure funding to enable their people to live healthy longer lives.
Since 2001, the Pueblo of Laguna has joined SDPI in combating diabetes in Indian Country. Throughout the past years, the Laguna SDPI program has expanded services and community reach. Along with the successful outcomes of SDPI nationally, the Pueblo has shown successful outcomes from their community-based program. The project focus for 2023 and throughout this next budget cycle will be implementing the physical activity education best practice. Through education, promotion, and creative engagement the Laguna SDPI program will utilize grant funds to carry out the best practice. A spectrum of creative interactive mechanisms for physical activity engagement will be offered such as recreational sport leagues, community runs/walks, wellness challenges, personal fitness training, group fitness instruction and community fitness center usage. In addition, nutrition and a diabetes support group will be offered.
The overarching goal of his project is to reduce the risk of Diabetes associated with inactivity and to educate and engage the community on the benefits of physical activity to improve lifelong health program has expanded services and community reach.
