Nevada Urban Indians, Inc. (NUI) is the only organization in Nevada providing culturally-sensitive services to the AI/AN population living off reservations. Its service area includes Washoe County (main cities Reno and Sparks) and Carson City in northern Nevada. NUI also serves tribal Natives seeking more confidentiality than they can receive at their tribal organizations.
The prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. is at least twice higher among the AI/AN population, compared with non-Hispanic whites, and Nevada is no exception in this respect. Some diabetes-related statistics for Washoe County and Carson City are worse than the state wide statistics, thus emphasizing the need for implementation of the SDPI program at NUI.
NUI’s SDPI application focuses on the Diabetes-related Education best practice (BP). The target group includes diagnosed pre-diabetic and diabetic AI/ANs, as well as Natives concerned about diabetes because of family history. Clients of all ages will be accepted, but most are expected to be adults. In support of the chosen BP we plan to carry out nutritional, physical, and stress reduction educational activities.
Additional activities will include integration of the BP with limited clinical services and monitoring of test results, assuring a reliable referral system, helping clients with transportation, providing incentives for completion of programs and ongoing participation in activities, and rigorous evaluation of all activities. Evaluation will include use of specially designed pre- and post-education surveys, and when possible, statistical analysis of the responses.
