Abstract
The Tucson Indian Center (TIC), an Urban Indian Center (UIC) in southern Arizona, will provide SDPI services to its current and new clients as well as to the larger AI/AN community in the area. TIC partners with the local IHS health center in San Xavier, on the Tohono O’odham Nation, as well as with the Nation’s health department and the health department of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
TIC’s priority Best Practice is Nutrition Education, and it will provide group and individual services to both youth and adults. This includes workshops and one-on-one nutrition education with a Registered Dietician/Nutritionist, Podiatrist, and Optometrist. TIC will also implement a Diabetes Self-Management Education curriculum.
In addition to this best practice, TIC will offer a foot care program, quarterly diabetes prevention clinics, ongoing fitness testing and health screenings, an on-site exercise facility, and a comprehensive physical activity program.
In 2022, the TIC opened a primary care practice on-site, co-located with its other prevention and social service programs. As its clinic grows, it will be able to provide comprehensive wrap around services to its clients with diabetes as well as those with a risk for developing diabetes.
