In the past year, 1,104 AI/AN individuals received healthcare services from our local Indian Health clinic, of which 64 persons were diagnosed with diabetes, and 91 were identified as having pre-diabetes. In 2022, only 2% of clients had a Body Mass Index (BMI)of 25% or lower. 56% had been diagnosed with Cardiovascular disease (CVD)and 38% were diagnosed with retinopathy. All of these conditions are associated with diabetes and serve as clear indicators for continued funding for the prevention and treatment of this condition. Additional diabetes-associated health issues are: uncontrolled hyperglycemia; abnormal A1C levels; non-compliance with prescribe diet and medication; inconsistency with keeping medical and laboratory appointments; failure to consistently maintain a food and blood glucose diary; unsatisfactory body weight management; resistance to research-based education on diabetes and health risks; and cultural beliefs and practices, relative to food intake.
The award of the 2023 SDPI grant will allow for the continuation of the essential services such as: Gym membership programs, for AI/AN members who are affected by both diabetes and prediabetes; to provide nutritional instructional classes live, and/or via zoom on prevention and management of diabetes; and by providing access of various types of incentives to attract members to participate in our services. The SDPI grant is truly needed to assist our AI/AN community members with the above-mentioned health risks factors and educational needs, within the Pit River Health Service area.
