Special Diabetes Program for Indians Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Projects - Marimn Health (formerly known as Benewah Medical Center) has provided diabetes treatment and prevention services since its inception in 1993. We have offered primary care services with medical providers, laboratory, pharmacy services continuously. Our Diabetes programs are located in the Marimn Health Facility on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in North Idaho. We offer primary care, including Family Practice Physicians, Physician Assistants as well as Nurse Practitioners. Hospital facilities are located approximately 30 minutes away. Endocrinologist services are also 30 minutes away. This distance and amount of traffic is a hardship on the people of the community to get transportation and/or drivers to numerous specialty medical services. The Diabetes Program is integrated in the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Clinic, Marimn Health. Our role is to provide education to the patients of the clinic and also education to the community at large. We work closely with the providers, pharmacy, mental health providers to meet the needs of the people with diabetes. The Diabetes Program is within the Community Health department and provide education, transportation and supplies that the person with diabetes may need. Health issues for people with diabetes in our community include adequate access to providers for medical, dental, mental health, substance abuse treatment. Issues also include adequate communication systems, which include phone cost, lack of local newspaper or radio. The rural area and remote housing is an issue as the bus system and clinic provided transportation system is limited. The need for specialty medical care including dialysis, neurology, endocrinology, cardiology, podiatry have been identified and are located 30 minutes away from the reservation. The programming of our Diabetes department includes three CBDCEs. Two of which are Registered Nutritionists/Licensed Dieticians, and a Registered Nurse. We are integrated into the medical area of the clinic and are able to be called into the patient's exam room throughout the day to provide the education that a person with diabetes may need. We also offer a support group and a education class. Our program offers prevention outreach programming throughout the year to the community, which include fun runs, walking groups, and school education. We support the other tribal programs when they offer an event. We offer staffing, or supplies as requested including Older American's annual Elders Dinner, Open house at schools, Water awareness programs with the Natural Resource Department. Monthly assistance is offered at the food distribution center by the nutritionists. Available to the patients of our clinic are 2 Certified Footcare Nurses to provide services for the feet. Marimn is requesting $250,186 in funding to support the Marimn Health SDPI Program.
