Samish Diabetes Program for Indians - The Samish Indian Nation has been a recipient of Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) for over 20 years. Being awarded the grant will allow us to participate in the SDPI for the next five-year cycle. Each year a plan is submitted by the Samish Diabetes Program, and if approved by Indian Health Service, we move forward with it. Within the SDPI program grantees must submit a year-long plan which includes a Best Practice from the list on the IHS website and track their results. For 2023, Samish is selecting the Best Practice of Nutrition Education and will be tracking the number of participants in our Diabetes Program who receive a consultation with a Registered Dietitian (or other health or wellness program staff). This will tell us how successful we have been in encouraging our participants to seek out professional assistance for their special nutritional needs. Access to a registered dietitian for nutritional consults and counseling will be offered to participants through our area Indian Health Board. Additionally, each month we plan on mailing nutrition vouchers to Samish Diabetes Program participants to assist with the cost of fresh vegetables and fruits, which can be expensive to purchase, but are important for a healthy, balanced diet. Educational materials and resources will be included in the monthly mailing to assist participants in making sound decisions regarding diabetic and heart-healthy nutritional choices. Participants will also be introduced to an online nutrition education and meal planning computer application which we hope will encourage positive meal choices. A new yearly plan will be developed in each successive year through 2027 and tracked for results as described above.
