The Fort Mojave Indian Tribe provides health services to its membership primarily located on reservation lands in Arizona, California and Nevada. The nearest cities capable of providing resources critical to the complete treatment of pre-diabetes and diabetes are located in Las Vegas, Nevada, (96 miles); Phoenix, Arizona, (228 miles); and San Bernardino, California, (213 miles). Due to its fairly remote location, the Fort Mojave Tribal Clinic has experienced severe difficulty in attracting and retaining qualified and interested medical providers for its Special Diabetes Prohgram. The Tribe's SDPI Program focuses on providing essential education in nutrition, exercise, prevention and treatment of diabetes, as well as measurement and analysis of treatment results. Due to the inability to attract providers and the distances involved, such patient education plays a much more critical role in the program. The FMIT SDPI Program will also actively continue to recruit providers to fill critical positions.
