Diabetes in AI/AN communities continues to not only be a nationwide problem, but a local community health problem which leads to other health complications. The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah serves 5 constituent Bands (Shivwits, Cedar, Indian Peaks, Kanosh, and Koosharem), where diabetes is prevalent. The health issues associated with diabetes in these communities include obesity, elevated BMI, high blood pressure, hypertension, and other heart diseases among the adult population. The health issues vary in each community, and the management of diabetes with medicine is the norm for tribal members. With grant funding, diabetes management through diabetes related education will benefit tribal members of all ages. By increasing education to tribal members who are diabetic or pre-diabetic with diabetes-related education, the opportunities for increased awareness of diabetes can help members make changes to their lifestyles. These opportunities are program events such as fitness challenges, education lessons, wellness visits, physical activity events, or nutrition workshops. By implementing these programs, The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah intends to achieve easier access to diabetes-related education opportunities and increased healthier lifestyle choices through diabetes-related education.
