The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is located in Elton (Allen Parish), Louisiana. We are a federally recognized tribe and operate a tribal health clinic (Coushatta Health Department) that supports the members of our tribe. The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana has successfully operated under SDPI funding since 1998 and is seeking to continue receiving SDPI program funding. This will allow for the support of a variety of collaborative activities designed to strengthen the Diabetes Related Education available to our members, as well as access to this education. It will also allow expansion of professional development training that benefits the Coushatta Health Department educator so that new educational opportunities can be offered. The Coushatta Health Department will be offering a variety of activities to benefit our tribal members with diabetes and their families/caregivers. Our contract endocrinologist and RN/CDCES will be travelling to our facility to conduct clinics ten times during the year. Our clinic staff, including family practice physician, nurse practitioner, and nursing staff will be screening members for diabetes, and assisting in monitoring those diagnosed with diabetes. Our RD/CDCES is available to patients three days per week for education of members. In March of 2023, we will be having a fruit/vegetable bag distribution with education on wise food choices for those with diabetes in observance of Diabetes Alert Day. In November 2023, the Coushatta Health Department will host a Diabetes Bingo event in observance of Diabetes Month. In 2023 we will also be starting a community garden where we will invite our members with a diabetes diagnosis to help plant and cultivate and care for the plants. This time will be utilized to educate patients and show them how to grow their own vegetables. These events are all planned by our RD/CDCES. She also monitors all our members with diabetes for annual requirements and plans and administers all endocrinology clinics. Our Health Director Paula Manuel helps plan these events and participates in carrying them out each year. These activities support Tribal community efforts regarding diabetes. Educational opportunities to our patients will serve to generate a higher level of knowledge of diabetes disease process and lifestyle adaptations to live healthy with diabetes. By increasing diabetes education, we hope to increase the number of members with diabetes that are under control and decrease the number of patients suffering from the complications of diabetes in our tribe.
