The Omaha Indian Reservation is located in Thurston County in Northeast Nebraska with
the tribal headquarters located in Macy, Nebraska. The very rural reservation is approximately
30 miles south of the nearest urban area, Sioux City, Iowa and 60 miles north of Omaha,
Nebraska. The Four Hills of Life Wellness Center and the Valentine Parker Jr Youth Prevention Center are located in Macy. These facilities are active in the community offering diabetes prevention education, screenings, physical activities, awareness events, and a summer camp for our youth. Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States. What is true nationwide is also true in Nebraska, as well as for the people of Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Data has revealed that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Nebraska, as well as in Thurston County. Two hundred thirty-three Omaha Tribal members who receive their primary care from the Carl T. Curtis Health Education Center are on the diabetes registry. 70% of the youth who were screened for diabetes risk factors had BMI’s at the 85th %ile or greater. The need for awareness, education, and diabetes prevention activities is great. The principle feature of this project will be to raise awareness and offer education and physical activities to our youth and community members about diabetes and diabetes risk factors. These goals will be achieved through the proposed program activities including screenings, education, physical activities, awareness events, a summer youth camp, and offering strategies for preventing diabetes. In the Omaha language, the word Omaha means "up stream people" or "going against the current." Sometimes this is expressed as "going against the odds." Now is the time to push our people to go "against the current" trends in obesity and the prevalence of diabetes and continue working hard towards living healthy, active lives.
