Nurse Faculty Loan Program - The Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing proposes the INSPIRE (Innovating Nurse Faculty through Scholarship, Preparation, Innovation, Recruitment, and Education) Nurse Educator Pipeline Initiative through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP). INSPIRE is a comprehensive workforce development initiative designed to reduce financial barriers, strengthen educator preparation, and expand the pipeline of qualified nurse faculty serving Louisiana and the Gulf South. The nation continues to face a critical shortage of nursing faculty, limiting the capacity of schools of nursing to educate the nurses needed to meet growing healthcare demands. These challenges are especially significant in Louisiana, where competition for qualified faculty and increasing workforce needs continue to strain nursing education programs. Building on established graduate nursing programs, including the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Nurse Educator concentration and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, INSPIRE will provide NFLP loan assistance to approximately 20 eligible graduate nursing students annually. The initiative will intentionally recruit students committed to careers in nursing education and prepare them through a comprehensive educator development experience that extends beyond financial support. INSPIRE also aligns with the School of Nursing's strategic vision to expand preparation of nurse educators through its proposed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Education and Technology, currently progressing through institutional approval. Together, these programs create a seamless pathway for developing future nurse educators, scholars, and academic leaders. INSPIRE Scholars will participate in structured faculty mentoring, teaching practicum experiences, simulation pedagogy, educational technology, artificial intelligence-enhanced teaching strategies, leadership development, teaching portfolio development, and professional development programming. The initiative also emphasizes resilience, mental health, and wellness by incorporating strategies that promote stress management, work-life integration, self-care, and burnout prevention to support long-term success in academic nursing. A distinguishing feature of INSPIRE is the Faculty Career Transition Program, which prepares graduates for successful entry into academic positions through individualized career coaching, curriculum vitae and teaching portfolio development, interview preparation, networking, faculty mentoring, and connections with accredited schools of nursing. These services are designed to increase faculty placement, support fulfillment of NFLP service obligations, and improve long-term retention in academic careers. The initiative will leverage Southeastern's extensive academic-practice partnerships to expand teaching opportunities, strengthen faculty recruitment, and increase employment pathways for future nurse educators. Expected outcomes include increased recruitment and retention of graduate nursing students, successful preparation of nurse educators, expanded placement of graduates into faculty positions, strengthened academic partnerships, and increased nursing education capacity. Continuous evaluation will monitor scholar recruitment, loan administration, academic progression, graduation, faculty employment, loan cancellation, and program outcomes to ensure HRSA compliance and continuous quality improvement. Through INSPIRE, Southeastern Louisiana University will develop a sustainable pipeline of innovative, practice-ready nurse educators who will educate future generations of nurses, strengthen the nursing workforce, and improve the health of communities throughout Louisiana and the Gulf South.
