Nurse Faculty Loan Program - The University of Florida College of Nursing (UFCON) prepares graduates of the PhD and DNP programs to assume an academic faculty position at an institution of higher education, with focus on educating the next generation of nurses, perform research to expand the evidence of nursing practice, provide leadership to address the needed changes in our healthcare system, advocate for policies at the local, state and national levels, and to improve health of populations, especially for under resourced communities. Following the successful administration of the NFLP in 2023-2024, the proposed project aims to continue to increase the number of graduates who are prepared to achieve excellence in nursing education and establish a career in academic nursing, particularly for nurses from under-represented minority groups. Objectives of this project are to: (1) increase the number of doctoral prepared nurse educators who will teach at institutions of higher education; (2) increase the number of graduates from under-represented minority groups who commit to a career in academic nursing; (3) prepare graduates to assume the role of nurse educator with advanced knowledge of social determinants of health; and, (4) expand clinical training capacity by increasing access to designated joint nurse faculty. Objectives to be measured include the percentage of NFLP-funded PhD and MSN-DNP students who: (a) successfully complete each year of the program; (b) graduate from the program; (c) are hired in a faculty role following graduation; (d) teach for four consecutive years following graduation; (e) are from under-represented minority groups; (f) complete the Nurse Educator Certificate (3-course series); (g) complete a graduate course focused on social determinants of health; (h) complete a teaching assistantship or preceptorship each semester while enrolled in certificate courses; and, (i) assume a designated joint nurse faculty position focused on clinical training with an institution of higher education. The detailed work plan described in the proposal will be carried out by the following individuals: Project Director & PhD Program Director, Dr. Angela Starkweather; Dr. Rene Love, DNP Program Director & Associate Dean for Academic Affairs – Graduate Clinical Education; Cecile Kiley, CON Academic Program Specialist III; Todd Fraser, CON Executive Director, Finance and Administration; Mailing Pauzauskie, PhD and DNP Advisor, CON Office of Student Services; Anna Hoffman, CON Director of Communication; UF Bursar’s Office (Holly Sutton, Brenda Noblitt, and Hunter Williams) and University Accounting Service, LLC (a UF approved Loan Servicing Vendor). Once the Award is received, we will continue to recruit eligible PhD and MSN-DNP students and orient them to the NFLP requirements. We expect to fund 20+ nursing graduate students through this project period, with a priority for under-represented minority students.
