Morningside University submits the Morningside University Nurse Faculty Loan Project to the Nurse Faculty Loan Program of the Health Resources and Services Administration to request continuation of NFLP funding. The current NFLP award is number 2 E01HP45827-02-00.??? ? Morningside University, in Sioux City, Iowa, is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The Nylen School of Nursing provides undergraduate and graduate-level coursework accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing. This flexible, hands-on program unites theory and practice through classroom education, a high-fidelity simulation center for skill practice, and provides expansive clinical experiences emphasizing underserved populations.?? ? The proposed project will increase the number of qualified nursing faculty by providing low interest loans to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students studying to be nurse faculty, and loan cancellation for DNP loan recipients who work as nurse faculty upon graduation.?? ? The target population is the medically underserved in the Tri-State Area. Morningside University and partnering clinical sites will continue to use NFLP funds to increase the number of qualified nurse faculty and clinical preceptors in the Tri-State Area, encompassing the cities of Sioux City, Iowa; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and South Sioux City, Nebraska, plus surrounding rural communities. The partnering collaborative sites include two Federally Qualified Health Centers and other community health care agencies caring for the large medically underserved populations in the Tri-State Area, including Native American and rural populations.? ? The proposed project will provide loans to students enrolled in Morningside’s DNP program to serve rural and other medically underserved areas. Morningside’s project is eligible for funding priority because all NFLP loan recipients will be DNP students. The NFLP award will serve as a loan fund to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, and reasonable education expenses for ten returning DNP students plus nine new DNP students. Students will have up to 85% of their loan and interest forgiven if they complete up to four years of nursing faculty employment or serve as an academic partner, post-graduation. This program will develop skilled nurse educators ready to fill open faculty, preceptor, and adjunct positions in Iowa, the Tri-State Area, and nationwide. Morningside University’s DNP graduates will continue to be well qualified to educate future nurses to care for the medically underserved.
