NFLP Program Director Leigh Small, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, FAAN; Professor and Dean, Address: 1355 Bogue Street, East Lansing, MI 48823, Office number: 517-355-6527 Email Address: LSmall@MSU.edu, Website Address: https://nursing.msu.edu/about-us/faculty-staff-directory/faculty-member/182 The purpose of this loan application is to request additional funds to continue offering the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) at Michigan State University (MSU) College of Nursing (CON). We are requesting $239,941.00. The college has been a proud sponsor of the NFLP since June 2012 and we remain committed to preparing excellent nurse faculty. We offer UG, MSN, DNP, and PhD degrees. All CON curricula focus on health equity in the context of Social Determinants of Health and health disparities. Objectives: 1. Increasing the number of applicants and awardees for the NFLP via annual comparisons within our database tracking system. 2. Strengthening the preparation of awardees to educate future nurses who are well-prepared to impact the underserved and those suffering from health disparities -- assessed by tracking completion of their PhD or DNP programs. 3. Providing awardees contemporary teaching/learning practices and inclusive educational strategies demonstrated by the number who complete the CCTN program or the professional education mini-series. 4. Increasing the diversity of our doctoral student body evidenced by tracking and comparing the diversity of NFLP awardees annually via demographic information. 5. Increasing the number of awardees that fulfill their NFLP service agreement as a nurse educator by follow up with employers where graduates work for 5-years post-graduation. We will target the clinical priority of transforming the workforce by preparing nurse educators at the doctoral level. We have two paths to doctoral preparation, the DNP and the PhD. The DNP route is via a BS or MSN to DNP, with specialty tracks. For the PhD path, we off
er two tracks, the MSN-to-PhD and BS-to-PhD. For the purposes of this application, we are requesting funds for doctoral students only, to align with the NFLP priority of “transforming the workforce.” All NFLP awardees will be highly encouraged to complete the Certificate of College Teaching in Nursing (CCTN). This nine-credit certificate program is grounded in the NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators and result in a transcriptable Certificate. If awardees are unable to take the CCTN, they will be required to complete 4 professional education mini-series at no cost. Dean Small will continue as Program Director to organize and oversee the program. During our 12 years of administering the NFLP, we have developed seamless standard operating procedures (SOPs). A thorough review of the SOPs was recently conducted, and processes will be slightly modified going forward to include all potential students and recognize all employment and preceptor roles that meet the service requirements for loan forgiveness. This will result in an increased number of awardees and post-graduation employment that will satisfy the required service for NFLP loan forgiveness. Our core team will facilitate all aspects of the NFLP. Marketing and promotion of the program will continue to rest with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) Director and Assistant Director as they are students’ primary academic advisors. Our Associate Dean of Academic Affairs has experience with NFLP and will promote this opportunity through her national affiliations. The Office of Financial Aid (OFA) and Loans Receivable Office (LRO) will track the finances of the program inclusive of awarding of funds, student payments or forgiveness, and completing the financials for the NFLP annual report. The Director of Nursing Professional Development in the college will organize delivery of the four mini-series and complete the required documents for continuing education credits.
