Nurse Faculty Loan Program - Project Title: Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) Applicant Organization Name: University of Iowa College of Nursing Address: College of Nursing, 50 Newton Road, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242 Project Director: Sandra Daack-Hirsch, PhD, RN Phone: 319-335-8210 FAX: 319-353-5535 E-mail: sandra-daack-hirsch@uiowa.edu Web site address: nursing.uiowa.edu Grant Program Funds Requested: $574,290 The purpose of this project is to secure Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) funding for graduate students at the University of Iowa College of Nursing who wish to pursue a career as a nurse educator. The College of Nursing prepares students at the doctoral level who may pursue programs of study to prepare them for the role of nurse educator. Students may enroll in the clinical doctorate (DNP) program and complement their plan of study with education courses. PhD students fulfill coursework and research requirements to prepare for roles as educators and researchers. Depending on degree attained, graduates can pursue teaching positions in associate degree, baccalaureate, or graduate programs of nursing upon completion and graduation from The University of Iowa College of Nursing. The University of Iowa College of Nursing currently offers graduate nursing programs leading to the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN-CNL and MSN-NSA), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD). Students enrolled in the MSN-CNL and MSN-NSA programs are not eligible for NFLP funding. The DNP program includes the specialty areas of Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care, Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care, Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthesia, and Health Systems/Administration. Students in the post-master’s DNP program build on their MSN-based clinical expertise as advanced practice nurses or nursing administration graduates to develop further clinical, leadership, and evidence-based practice expertise. The PhD program provides students with expertise in research in a selected area of interest aligned with a PhD mentor with expertise in that area. To prepare all doctoral students for the educator role, the program offers the following: 1) three education courses taught by nursing faculty, 2) potential teaching experiences as a lecturer or clinical instructor, 3) access to offerings by The University of Iowa Center for Teaching, and 4) eligibility for the Graduate Certificate in College Teaching offered through the College of Education at the University of Iowa. The Center for Teaching classes provide students with the theoretical content needed by novice educators. The Graduate Certificate in College Teaching is a 12-semester course of study that includes didactic and teaching practicums culminating in a professional Portfolio in College Teaching. Each student will work with their mentor to determine specific learning needs important for them to prepare for the nurse educator role building on their previous experience. Upon receipt of funding, the College of Nursing will provide funding for: • 14 previously funded students (DNP students) for continuing funding • 12 new (anticipated) DNP students to begin Fall 2022 who will be eligible for faculty positions
