Nurse Faculty Loan Program - PROJECT ABSTRACT Project Title: NFLP 2024 Applicant Organization Name: The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Address: 630 West 168th Street, Box 49, New York, NY 10032-3702 Project Director Name: Susan Doyle-Lindrud and Judy Honig Contact Phone Numbers: (212) 305-2816 Email:smd9@cumc.columbia.edu; : jch3@cumc.columbia.edu List of Grant Program Funds Requested in Application: $ 400,000.00 If Requesting a Funding Preference, Priority, or Special Consideration as outlined in Section V.2. of the program-specific NOFO, indicate here: N/A The purpose of the proposed project is to increase the number of doctorally-prepared advanced practice nurse (APN) faculty. To accomplish this, the project is seeking to mitigate financial barriers and provide financial support for students enrolled in the Columbia University School of Nursing (CUSON) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree programs through the NFLP loan cancellation program. CUSON DNP programs prepare post-baccalaureate nurses in the following nurse practitioner programs: Adult-Geriatric Acute, Family, Pediatrics, and Psychiatric Mental Health. Priority will be given to students who are committed to assuming a full-time faculty role or joint-appointed faculty, serving as a preceptor in an underserved area and/or with underserved populations. CUSON is requesting NFLP funding for 10 DNP full time students enrolled in one of the aforementioned nurse practitioner programs totaling $400,000. All 10 NFLP recipients will 1) maintain CUSON academic standards; 2)participate in nurse educator development activities; 3) complete the DNP program in their specialty at the end of the third year; 4) obtain certification and state licensure in their specialty within 6 months of conferral of the DNP; and 5) secure a faculty position and/or clinical position as a joint-appointed faculty serving as preceptor in an underserved area or with an underserved population within nine months of completing the DNP degree. NFLP recipients will participate in a robust retention program, including faculty and peer mentorship, and will attend workshops and programming related to their future classroom and clinical teaching roles. All NFLP recipients will be closely advised during their student tenure, graduation, and transition into academia and/or clinical positions. NFLP recipients will be matriculated CUSON DNP students and will be selected through an application process; they will be enrolled full-time in the DNP program. Each recipient will receive $40,000 toward their cost of education for the first year of the year program. To accomplish these goals, CUSON will optimize its existing programs. The plan includes opportunities for the NFLP recipient to obtain faculty advisement, access a peer mentor through the peer mentorship program, and in later years, become the peer mentor for students; and utilize the resources of CUSON career services to assist in securing a faculty or joint-appointment position upon graduation.
