Center for Native American Health's Indians into Medicine- New Mexico (CNAH InMED-NM) - The proposed Center for Native American Health’s Indians into Medicine-New Mexico (CNAH InMED-NM) project will adapt and implement an evidence-based, wraparound approach to increase the number of American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) health professionals through five overarching strategies: instrumental mentoring, professional knowledge, navigating university culture, academic skills, and professional and peer networks. CNAH InMED-NM’s proposed six goals include: increase the number of AIANs in medical school and allied health professions at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center (HSC) and School of Medicine (SOM); develop and strengthen partnerships with schools, Tribal communities, alumni, and Tribal representatives through a community Program Advisory Board; offer a summer preparatory program for AIAN students to enhance math, science, language arts, and critical thinking skills and increase exposure to health-related professions; all UNM HSC/SOM AIAN students will have access to tutoring, counseling, and support services through a culturally-informed holistic approach; employ and support qualified AIANs in the project; and address the opioid crisis by educating and training AIAN SOM students in opioid prevention, treatment, and recovery. To accomplish these goals, CNAH InMED-NM will target AIAN K-12 students, community and Tribal college students, UNM pre-health undergraduates, and existing medical school and allied health profession students enrolled at the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center and School of Medicine. Proposed CNAH InMED-NM activities include a Journey of a Healer project, Dream Makers Health Careers program, Native Healthcare Career Expo, recruitment outreach workshops, Undergraduate Native American Health Equity Research Fellowship, Health Careers Academy summer preparatory program, medical student mentoring program, peer-to-peer network activities, Indigenous Research Day, traditional healer sessions, and opioid-related educational presentations. CNAH InMED-NM will outreach, recruit, and contact a total of 3,455 AIAN students by the end of Year 5.
