Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe Injury Prevention Program: Elder Fall and Child Passenger Safety Initiative - The Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe (FPST), a federally recognized Tribe located sixty-five miles east of Reno, Nevada, seeks support through the Tribal Injury Prevention Cooperative Agreement Program Part I to reduce preventable injuries among its Elders and children. The Fallon Tribal Health Center (FTHC) serves FPST and nearby Tribes, providing care to a population facing high poverty, limited insurance, and elevated injury rates. Falls among Elders and motor vehicle-related injuries among children are the community’s two priority concerns. Many Elders face fall risks due to chronic illness and mobility challenges, while improper car seat use contributes to higher child injury and death rates. To address these needs, FPST will implement two evidence-based interventions: “Matter of Balance” and “Fit & Strong!” exercise programs for Elders, and a car seat distribution and caregiver education program for families. In the first year, the Tribe will deliver both exercise programs to at least twenty older adults and distribute twenty age-appropriate car seats—prioritizing infants aged zero to one. By Year Five, FPST aims to reduce reported Elder falls by twenty percent and ensure at least seventy percent of caregivers demonstrate correct car seat use. Sustainability will be achieved by integrating these programs into existing health and wellness operations, training Tribal staff as facilitators, and tracking outcomes through the FTHC’s electronic health record system. Through these initiatives, FPST will strengthen community safety and protect its Elders and children for generations to come.
