Ak-Chin Indian Community Injury Prevention Program - Injuries are the single leading cause of death for American Indian and Alaskan Natives between the ages of 1 and 44 years. Unintentional Elder fall related injuries are a leading cause of hospitalizations in American Indians and Alaskan Native communities. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries. Implementation of prevention and modification strategies, some new and some currently in place with current programming will be a focus of this project. Strategies for the project will include home safety assessments with modifications, exercise programs for elders, elder fall community outreach and education including medication management, and fall/injury related questionnaires. It is important to maintain and improve the elder’s quality of life and prevent possible debilitating injuries. The intended beneficiaries of this project are elder’s age 55+.
