Chiricahua is the primary, safety net healthcare provider in Cochise County, AZ. In 2023, Chiricahua provided health services to over 33,500 individuals in more than 132,000 visits. The county is 6,200 square miles or roughly the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Both geographic isolation and the prevalence of poverty make providing primary healthcare inherently complex and challenging. The City of Willcox supports the surrounding communities of Bowie, Cochise, San Simon, and Sunsites. Together these communities have a population that identifies as 70% racial and ethnic minorities. Twenty-three percent of individuals live in households with incomes below the federal poverty threshold and 11% have no health insurance. Since 2003, Chiricahua has offered both medical and dental services on their mobile clinics in Willcox to augment the services of local providers, the community hospital, and rural clinics. Yet the need for additional services remains; 46% of adults had no dental care in the last year and 29% had no usual source of medical care. Thirty-five percent of adults are obese, 34% have high blood pressure, 20% have either a medical or mental health disability, 19% are smokers, and 12% have diabetes. Chiricahua will construct a 22,000 square foot health center that will offer medical, dental, behavioral health, laborator
y, and pharmacy services. The new health center will be on an 18-acre parcel of land that is owned by Chiricahua, on a major roadway, close to Northern Cochise Community Hospital in Willcox, AZ. The hospital’s focus on acute, urgent care compliments the health center’s focus on primary, preventive care. The health center will offer services without regard to demographic or insurance status and will use a sliding scale discount fee program for those without insurance.
