Congressionally Directed Spending for Construction Projects - Lana‘i Community Health Center (LCHC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, federally qualified health center serving Lana‘i, incorporated in 2004. Our mission is to take care of the community by directly providing health services and partnering with other organizations and providers. LCHC serves the island of Lana‘i (Census Tract 15009031601), as its population is medically underserved, also referred to as a designated Medically Underserved Population (MUP). LCHC’s target population consists of everyone on Lana‘i, with a special focus on those who live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. LCHC provides services in a culturally sensitive manner – providing written and oral translation as needed. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay for service. LCHC serves individuals of all ages, ethnicity, gender, and residency — old timers, part-timers, and newcomers. LCHC also provides services, as needed, to tourists and contractors working on island. LCHC accepts all insurances and assists its patients with understanding and navigating their insurance coverage questions. Lana‘i is one (1) island among eight (8) main islands that comprise the State of Hawai‘i. The island is small and geographically isolated with a population of 2,888 (2020 Census, ACS 5-Year Estimate, Lana‘i) and is part of Maui County administratively. Lana‘i has a diverse population – Asian 50% (vast majority, are Filipino), White 15%, Hispanic/Latino 9%, Native Hawaiian 10%, Two or more races 24% (US Census, American Community Survey, 2019, Lana‘i City). Geographical and transportation barriers for Lana‘i residents are very significant. An ocean separates this small island of 2,888 from neighboring islands of Maui, Moloka‘i, and O‘ahu. With only one consistent airline providing services to Lana‘i on a 208EX Grand Caravan with nine (9) seats, its limited schedule (with five to six flights per day, depending upon the day of the week) makes it difficult to impossible to get to a doctor’s appointment and back to Lana‘i on the same day. The project goal is to complete the LCHC alterations/renovations (improvement and/or reconfiguration of the interior arrangements of an existing facility) of its current facility (under its current roofline) to accommodate the expanding services provided to patients, because of the rising needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic and more recently flu and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), while working to keep routine services available to patients and addressing barriers like geography and transportation. The alterations/renovations (facilities construction project) to be funded by Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending (CPF/CDS) totals 2,906 SF (New Floor Addition = 151 SF, Exterior Deck Expansion = 97 SF, and Alteration/Renovation = 2,658 SF). The spaces to be altered/renovated are Optometry, Provider Office, Front Exterior Lanai, Medical Storage Room, Pharmacy Office, Reception, Copier, Outreach, and Dental.
