Renovate an existing clinic space originally built in 1991 as a NICU. The current space supports AdventHealth Shawnee Mission's booming maternal fetal program of whom 20% of patients are uninsured. - AdventHealth Shawnee Mission (AHSM) requests $1,000,000 to design, renovate, expand, and equip its Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinic to improve access to specialized, high-risk obstetric care across the Kansas City region, including rural and medically underserved communities. AHSM is a regional leader in women’s and children’s services, supporting more than 3,350 births annually and operating a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care. Nearly 20 percent of patients served are Medicaid-enrolled or uninsured, reflecting the organization’s commitment to equitable, high-quality care delivery. Maternal health outcomes remain a significant concern in Kansas, where maternal mortality exceeds national benchmarks and highlights persistent disparities in access to timely, risk-appropriate care. These challenges are particularly pronounced in rural communities facing provider shortages and geographic barriers. Demand for MFM services continues to increase due to rising rates of high-risk pregnancies, including advanced maternal age, chronic disease, and pregnancy-related complications. Currently, patients experience appointment wait times of four to five weeks, delaying access to critical diagnostic and consultative services and increasing the risk of adverse maternal and infant outcomes. To address these gaps, the proposed project will expand and modernize the MFM clinic through the addition of a fourth ultrasound suite, expanded consultation and exam rooms, two dedicated non-stress testing (NST) areas, private provider offices, a centralized nurse station, and a redesigned patient entrance with integrated check-in. These enhancements represent a fundamental shift from a constrained, space-limited environment to a purpose-built clinical setting designed for efficiency, coordination, and patient-centered care. The future state will transform care delivery by enabling a transition from a sequential workflow to a parallel care model that supports simultaneous imaging, consultation, and monitoring. With expanded capacity appointment wait times is expected to decrease from four to five weeks to approximately one to two weeks, allowing earlier identification and management of high-risk conditions and reducing delays in care. The improved infrastructure will enable the clinic to accommodate urgent and same-day referrals, strengthen care coordination, and improve patient flow. Dedicated NST space will allow concurrent fetal monitoring, reducing total visit time, while expanded consultation rooms will eliminate bottlenecks. A centralized nurse station and dedicated sonographer workspace will enhance communication and clinical efficiency. A central component of the project is the integration of telehealth-enabled services to extend care to rural and underserved populations. Dedicated telehealth consultation spaces will support virtual visits, follow-up care, and ongoing monitoring, reducing transportation barriers and improving continuity of care. The project will also strengthen recruitment and retention of specialized providers by creating a modern, flexible care environment that supports team-based workflows and hybrid care models. Improved clinical infrastructure and workspace will enhance efficiency and provider sustainability. Collectively, these investments will expand access to high-risk prenatal care, significantly reduce delays in evaluation and treatment, and improve maternal and infant outcomes through earlier diagnosis, timely intervention, and enhanced care coordination. With completion anticipated by February 28, 2027, the expanded clinic will position AHSM to meet growing demand while delivering equitable, timely, and high-quality care for high-risk pregnancies.
