The consistent growth of Sothern Apache County has pushed White Mountain Regional Medical Center to move forward with an expansion of our Emergency Room Department from 5 licensed beds to 11 licensed beds and a fast-track area. The continued growth and volume of higher acuity patients that we care for in the emergency department with longer dwell times resulting in boarding has resulted in space constraints which have led to patients being cared for in unconventional spaces, such as hallways and waiting rooms. The Expansion will renovate approximately 2760 sqft and will add approximately 7698 sqft to our building. Without the emergency room expansion, we continue to have space constraints which leads to division of our workforce, supplies and equipment and is not conducive to throughput or best practice. It should also be noted that anytime we care for patients in unconventional spaces we activate a portion of our Crisis Standards of Care plan, and enter into Contingency care which requires us to notify appropriate State agencies and utilizes more resources. It is a less effective way to care for patients and strains our patient care processes and systems. The Congressional Directed Spending funding will be utilized for both minor construction and fixed and moveable equipment to help prepare our emergency department to improve our Emergency Department throughput. (Utilizing CDS Funds) will focus on equipment purchases, moveable and fixed, and minor construction to ensure a completed expansion will prepare our facility to care for the increase in patient volume. CDS funds will also be utilized for the paving of facility ground and an electrical upgrade to support our facility ED expansion.
