Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending - Construction - The project includes renovating 8.430.663 square feet of the building. We’ll reconfigure the space to provide a waiting area for clients, space for an observation room, offices, a virtual immersion room, and storage space for equipment and supplies. The renovation and additional equipment, supplies, and software will allow the growth of SLAR into the Hampton Roads community where we can train medical office assistants and other medical personnel outside of the university. Hampton University Center for Simulation Learning and Research (SLAR) is dedicated to excellence in healthcare and research through advancing patient safety and improving multidisciplinary team performance. This innovative instructional environment and learning laboratory provides challenging, immersive simulation training for students in various disciplines including medicine, physical therapy, communicative sciences, nursing, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals. Hampton University SLAR is a safe space where learning, research and education is valued, fostered, and nurtured. We promote a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment where systems thinking can stimulate change. The goal of SLAR is to improve healthcare education and patient safety through the identification of best integrative practices and patient safety issues. Consistent with HRSA’s goal to support health infrastructure, through training of health professionals, SLAR serves a diverse population of students within the university. To date we have developed affiliations and worked with Communicative Sciences, Kinesiology, Nursing, and Physical therapy students to provide a unique perspective on the universality of healthcare in the United States. These students will go on to serve their communities in various areas of healthcare delivery. To fully achieve our vision, the renovation and modernization of the Simulation Center is needed to provide simulation services beyond the university and into the Hampton Roads Community.
