The SGMC Health Berrien Emergency Department (ED) Expansion promises to address the growing demand for healthcare services in Berrien County through expansion and modernization at the site of the current hospital facility. SGMC Health broke ground on the $15 million expansion in May of 2023. The project will increase the number of exam rooms from three to nine, provide create space for psychiatric patients and quarantine of infectious patients, improve staff work, and provide a covered ambulance docking station. The facility will be reoriented with a new patient drop-off, entrance, and main lobby. This proposal requests $1.87 million in congressional directed spending (CDS) to purchase fixed and moveable equipment required to complete the project. This includes modern medical technology such as mobile x-ray machine, a portable ultrasound machine, a portable infant warmer, new monitoring equipment, and other clinical fixtures required to operate an ED. Additionally, the requested funds will provide new furniture for patient waiting areas, storage and cabinetry, and other non-clinical equipment designed to enhance the patients overall experience and improve efficiency throughout the ED. Once complete, the expansion will decrease wait times, increase throughput, provide a safer environment, and improve patient satisfaction. The SGMC Health Berrien ED Expansion is an investment in the future of rural Georgia. The new facility set to be complete in October of 2024 will secure convenient access to emergency care in Berrien Country for years to come.
