In 2019, NYU Langone Health opened a new state-of-the-art cancer center, PCC—Sunset Park, adjacent to our NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. As the only National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center offering care for people in Brooklyn, Perlmutter Cancer Center—Sunset Park fulfills an unmet medical need for the population in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, and adjacent neighborhoods. PCC—Sunset Park brings world-class care, with a full suite of cancer services, including medical oncology, surgery, and radiation oncology, to a highly underserved patient population. Sunset Park is a working class, low–income community that continues to experience the health and social problems connected to urban poverty. It is home to over 152,700 residents, 54 percent of whom are low income and living at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. Almost 50 percent of the population is foreign–born with many being undocumented. Over 30 percent of Sunset Park residents report having fair or poor health. Sunset Park is one of the highest Medicaid-concentrated communities in the United States. Over the past two years, between 74-80% of the radiation oncology patients treated at PCC—Sunset Park were either Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries (25-28% Medicaid and 45-50% Medicare). Cancer care for Brooklyn’s southwest neighborhoods now includes increased access to innovative cancer treatments, additional specialists, and clinical trials. People with cancer also have access to a screening program for lung cancer, coordinated care for people with breast cancer, and expansion of state-of-the art radiation oncology services. Perlmutter Cancer Center—Sunset Park has the most advanced radiation therapy equipment in Brooklyn and is staffed by top NYU Langone Faculty. Our equipment includes the latest linear accelerator, used for external beam radiation therapy, a treatment that directs radiation at the tumor from outside the body. Our experts also plan radiation therapy treatments by using a CT simulator, which allows us to precisely locate the tumor and spare normal tissue. We are currently undertaking an over $20 million capital investment plan to expand and advance our oncology services at PCC—Sunset Park even further. One important piece of this plan is the purchase and installation of a PET/CT machine. PET/CT is one of the key imaging modalities in the diagnosis and staging of cancer. This machine allows one to see metabolically active cancer cells by their uptake of a labeled sugar molecule, thereby allowing the combination of functional and anatomical imaging. We do not currently have this equipment at PCC—Sunset Park, so our Brooklyn patients often travel to Manhattan for this service. We plan to install a PET/CT to serve two functions for our patients. First, it will act as a standard diagnostic PET/CT and allow our patient population to have this important study closer to home. Second, it will also be used as an important tool in radiation planning for patients, allowing us to utilize the functional imaging of the PET to plan radiation treatments. About 25 percent of all the radiation oncology patients treated at Perlmutter Cancer Center in Manhattan reside in Brooklyn. In Fiscal Year 2022, 236 patients from Perlmutter Cancer Center—Sunset Park traveled to PCC in Manhattan for 1976 PET/CT encounters. It is clear and is important that we continue to enable access to health care services closer to home, especially for patients undergoing difficult cancer treatments.
