Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending - Construction - Clemson University is a nationally acclaimed research university with broad impact in the state, regional, and national economy. Located in rural upstate South Carolina, Clemson is an engine of economic growth, workforce development, and social mobility for thousands of citizens with $4.2 billion in annual economic impact representing strong ROI for $240 million of taxpayer funding. Clemson enrolls over 27,000 students, including 21,400 undergraduate students that live on and around the University’s campus, and employs a staff of 5,700. Given Clemson’s rural location, the surrounding communities do not have sufficient medical infrastructure to provide adequate, convenient healthcare to Clemson’s student and employee populations. In a recent survey, 92% of CU students considered Clemson’s student health facility, to be their primary care provider. Accessible, high-quality healthcare falls disproportionally on Clemson University as compared to other universities nationally. Space and budget constraints have prevented the University from expanding service lines that would otherwise benefit the student population, such as optometry or nutrition services. As Clemson continues to grow, it must both increase health care support to meet growing health care needs of the University population. Clemson University’s Division of Student Affairs, which focuses on student support and holistic development, is requesting $6 million to fund specialized healthcare equipment for a new student health center. This equipment would be used to outfit the facility and thus would enhance student wellness, behavioral health, and/or telehealth capabilities. The funds will also enable the expansion of capacity and variety of ancillary medical services on campus that will support students, faculty, and staff. This request is in addition to the $6M award (HRSA Award # CE152269) received in FY24 to support the design process for building a new 79,500 sq. ft. replacement health center to be located on campus in Clemson, SC.
