Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending - Construction - The Navajo Nation Division of Social Services/Department of Family Services is submitting its application for federal Health Resources & Service Administration funding, via opportunity number HRSA-23-117 Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending (CPF/CDS). The DFS will partner with the Utah Navajo Health Systems (UNHS) to utilize CPF/CDS funding for a non-construction project for renovations of the Northern TREE House Domestic Violence Shelter. This construction project will be a new, stand-alone structure which will be a new shelter facility. The current Northern Tree House Shelter is located in Shiprock, New Mexico on Navajo Nation land. The Navajo Nation expands into three States: Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah with a land base of approximately 17,544,500 acres. Shiprock is one of the largest towns on the Navajo Nation with a high number of victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and crime victimization locally. Th shelter serves the Shiprock area, as well as the northern Navajo Nation where shelter resources are limited. It is anticipated the new facility will be an approximately 7,200 square foot building on four acres of land. UNHS plans to build a new shelter facility on the current four acres of land. The current shelter building will remain in use and open for shelter services while the new shelter facility is being built. When the new shelter facility is completed, UNHS will tear down the existing shelter facility. This will allow for no interruption of services for shelter residents during the building of the new shelter facility. The new facility will house women and children seeking emergency shelter due to domestic violence abuse, sexual assault abuse, and crime victimizations. In addition to standard 24/7 emergency shelter services, the Shelter will provide counseling services, and direct victim services. Shelter residents will also have access to direct victim services such as assistance in applying for protective orders, court accompaniment for court hearings, transportation to court and medical appointments, assistance in applying for public assistance, and assistance with safety planning. The new facility will have a kitchen/dining area, living room, multipurpose room, offices, counseling room, and a minimum of six bedrooms for shelter residents. The exact dimensions and layout being developed during the design phase of the project with the help of architect.
