Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending - Construction - There is an unmet need throughout Michigan for rehabilitative services to respond to the growing numbers of children with various illnesses, disabilities, and conditions. Findings published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show an increase in the prevalence of developmental and intellectual disabilities in children aged 3 – 17. Increased prevalence means an increased need for diagnosis and treatment; however, the health community has been unable to increase services at a rate equivalent to the growing demand. Our solution, in partnership with Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital (HDVCH), is to create an extraordinary hospital designed and dedicated exclusively to the rehabilitation of infants, children, and teens – one that will exponentially enhance collaboration, medical treatment and clinical outcomes and bring brighter futures to thousands of children and their families. It will be the first children’s rehabilitation hospital in Michigan, ninth in the nation and one of only three located between the east and west coasts. In other words, children and their families in Michigan and the Midwest will be exceptionally well served. Corewell Health leaders are deeply committed to this project because: • It will make children’s rehabilitation services more effective and efficient. • Thousands of additional children will be served annually. • Kids can be transferred sooner to Mary Free Bed. • A medical fellowship program in pediatric physiatry will be established, positioning HDVCH for potential special recognition. The hospital will be connected to the main Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and will connect via an elevated walkway. The hospital will be around 67,000 square feet and will be LEED certified. The first floor of the new pediatric rehabilitation hospital, focused on outpatient care, will include multiple specialized therapy gyms, labs and radiology, private treatment and exam rooms, a café with adult and kid-friendly menus, and consultation rooms for medical teams to meet with parents. The second floor, focused on inpatient care, will include 24 private rooms with space for parents to stay overnight, ventilator capability in all rooms, multiple specialized therapy gyms, home-like areas where children practice everyday tasks, and common eating spaces for kids and parents to enjoy meals together. The hospital will also include indoor and outdoor recreation areas for all age groups, sophisticated technology fit for kids, and an Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics program. Our vision is to become a destination hospital for the Midwest, ultimately serving an estimated 12,000 – 13,000 children annually. This will be truly transformational for families of children needing specialized care, bringing everything they need under one roof.
