Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending - Construction - Project description: Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC) will implement the Nursing Workforce Development - Construction of Classroom and Simulation Laboratory project to train current and future nurses and other allied health professionals in Berlin, Vermont. CVMC will expand its training facilities by building a second classroom with integrated simulation space to train practical nurses, licensed nursing assistants, registered nurses, pharmacy technicians, medical assistants, and surgical technicians, providing a safe, controlled environment for students and health care workers to gain practical skills. Needs the project will address: CVMC’s training programs address a variety of workforce needs, including training current employees to upskill and advance into critically needed allied health positions. In addition, through collaboration with the Community College of Vermont, Vermont State University, and other educational partners, the facility will be used to provide training for students in local certificate, associate, and bachelor’s degree programs. CVMC’s current training facility operates at its maximum student capacity each year. Services that will be provided: CVMC will complete a capital renovation of its classroom facility, and will convert a room currently used as storage into a new 1600 square foot classroom. The project includes all construction and renovation costs associated with the project, including improvements to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, ventilation, and other systems. In addition, CVMC will purchase fixed and movable equipment, including simulation training equipment, to support its health care training programs. Through the proposed capital renovation project, CVMC will double its health care workforce training capacity, providing space for groups of 20 students at a time to participate in training programs. CVMC expects that the new space will enable training programs to serve at least 50 additional trainees each year. By increasing training space, CVMC will be better able to meet local health care staffing needs, addressing the critical need for high-quality patient care for Central Vermont residents. Populations that will be served: The immediate beneficiaries of the project will be individuals who receive training, including current and future practical nurses, licensed nursing assistants, registered nurses, pharmacy technicians, medical assistants, and surgical technicians. As a result of expanded training, patients and community members who receive health care in Central Vermont will have better access to well-trained, health care providers in their local communities.
