In Maine, heart disease was the second leading cause of death in 2022 with 3,357 deaths statewide. Four decades ago, York Hospital created the first cardiac catheterization laboratory in the state of Maine and hired the area’s first board-certified cardiologist. Since then, York Hospital has established a Cardiovascular Care team with 12 cardiologists and offers a full spectrum of cardiac care – from diagnostics (such as nuclear stress tests and cardiovascular ultrasound), to intervention (including cardiac and peripheral vascular angioplasty), to cardiac rehabilitation. York Hospital’s renowned cardiac & vascular catheterization lab treats over 11,000 patients each year and provides cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, ablations, vascular & cardiac angiography and advanced expertise in complete interventional cardiac care. In addition, York Hospital is one of only four hospitals in the state of Maine to perform percutaneous coronary interventions (coronary artery ballooning/stenting). York Hospital is now in need of a renovated cardiac catheterization lab as current equipment is at the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. The hospital has a modernization plan to renovate existing space and replace critical equipment and proposes to direct philanthropic support, institutional investment/equity, and federal funding to fulfill this critical initiative to provide patients in Southern Maine with the highest quality, lifesaving cardiac care.
