This comprehensive project aims to improve the standard of care for the population of pediatric patients through the non-invasive imaging techniques such as Spectroscopy, Functional MR, Fetal MR, Cardiac MR, MR Urography, and whole-body MRI exams. The current MRI suite, occupying 830sf, will remain functional while constructing the new facility in one of two proposed locations, ranging between 900sf and 1,275sf. The MRI suite will feature four-zone screening and access control protocols according to the American College of Radiology’s “ACR Manual on MR Safety.” Other features include an MRI scanner room, control room, entry vestibule, system component room, spaces for patient interviews and clinical screening, treatment/resuscitation area, and provisions for patient belongings. The suite will also have ferromagnetic detection and warning systems to ensure the containment of non-MRI-safe objects outside restricted MRI safety zones. Depending on requirements, HVAC modifications may be introduced, and building exterior changes might be necessary to accommodate an appropriate quench vent system. The timeline for this project spans from September 2023 to August 2026, during which different phases like planning, design, permitting, construction, and installation will be accomplished. In the planning phase, the team will conduct a conceptual study of the proposed locations for the MRI suite, assess workflows, and finalize budgets. During the design phase, architects and engineers will conduct field assessments and user group meetings to define the needs of the end-users and equipment vendors while adhering to requisite codes and guidelines. Permit acquisition, bid solicitation, contract awarding, and construction will be the primary focus in the subsequent phases, with a dedicated project manager overseeing the progression. The project completion date is slated for August 2026, subject to any unforeseen conditions or delays. This project represents a significant investment in the improvement of healthcare services for children at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. It signifies the commitment to providing state-of-the-art, non-invasive diagnostic imaging capabilities and fostering an enhanced standard of pediatric care.
