This clinic is unique to the region in that it offers larger exam rooms to accommodate wheelchairs, is equipped with specialized equipment (i.e., body lifts), accommodates behavior plans and/or prescribes/administers medicine for those patients who experience anxiety and/or aggression, and allows for increased appointment times to accommodate the individual's special needs...most of which you do not find in traditional medical practices. Further, the clinic is operated by physicians and staff trained to meet the needs of the disabled population, which allows for better communication, improved quality of care, and overall better health outcomes. Funding from the Congressionally Directed Spending Projects will be used for capital upgrades to the interior and exterior of this clinic in an effort to expand accessibility, increase safety, improve quality, and make room for potential expansion of specialty services(e.g. phlebotomy, optometry, neurology, etc.) in the future. The long term goal of this initiative is to transform Center Health Care into a Regional Disability Clinic for the Capital Region and beyond, to allow patients with disabilities the ease of a “one-stop shop” which will lead to more coordinated, efficient and personalized care for the patient, as well as reduce overall healthcare costs.
