Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending - Construction - Community Medical Centers Construction/Expansion of an Existing Facility at Community Regional Medical Center Total CPF/CDS Funding Request = $1,500,000 2823 Fresno Street Fresno, CA 93721-1324 John Strubert Vice President – Ancillary Services Community Health System 2823 Fresno, Street Fresno, CA 93721-1324 559-459-6272 office 559-459-2567 fax JStrubert@communitymedical.org communitymedical.org This project would help expand and enhance Community Medical Centers (CMC) physical lab space to incorporate a new automated microbiology track, replace equipment that is on loan from the state of California, purchase special equipment to help with complex respiratory and COVID-19 disease management, and provide storage for COVID-19 testing reagents. These upgrades will greatly enhance CMC’s ability to process the type and volume of tests needed for COVID-19 patients, including variant identification, and provide equipment and testing capacity that will help position CMC to be a primary microbiology laboratory for the future. This is a multiphase project; which federal funding can help jumpstart. Community Regional Medical Center is the location of the Microbiology department for the Community Medical Centers. CMC facilities include: • Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) • Clovis Community Medical Center (CCMC) • Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital (FHSH) • Community Subacute & Transitional Care Center (CSTCC) • Community Behavioral Health Center (CBHC), and • Community Cancer Institute (CCI) The microbiology department provides diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical information key to targeting care for patient populations and departments including those seen in our emergency departments, hospital admitted and long-term care patients as well as outpatients seen in our Cystic Fibrosis, dialysis and pediatric clinics, home care patients and immunocompromised cancer patients. Our Microbiology Department provides general microbiology culture and sensitivity testing, Acid-Fast Bacillus (AFB) and Fungus testing and various Molecular/Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Immunology testing options that meet the unique needs of the diseases found in this geographical region. Funding will be utilized to purchase new and replacement equipment to help ensure that the microbiology department is able to quickly and efficiently help medical providers identify patients’ healthcare issues. It will also help guide the appropriate treatments and antibiotics for current disease states and have the tools to quickly act and implement new testing as applicable. Currently, many of these advanced testing requests are sent to reference laboratories. Being able to do the testing at the CRMC microbiology laboratory would provide information in a timelier fashion and improve patient care. In addition, to date, Community’s laboratories have performed over 498,000 COVID-19 tests and are managing high volumes of routine testing to accommodate the needs of critically ill COVID-19-positive patients. During the height of the Omicron surge, at one time, we had more than 400 COVID-19-positive inpatients. The full project is $5.1 million for upgrades and purchases, but we have requested $1.5 million of the project costs to be disbursed throughout the project funding period of September 30, 2023 to September 29, 2026.
