In May 2019, CC opened a new health center site in Clairton, PA by renting three exam rooms and a small registration area from Magee-Women’s Clinic on Miller Avenue. Current space constraints limit the number of patients we can see per day and prevent us from adding much-needed psychiatry and counseling or dental services. We will construct a 27,000 sq. ft. three-story building in Clairton. Half of the new facility will house a medical, dental, and behavioral health center focused on overcoming local health disparities. It will employ added healthcare professionals in Clairton while leasing the remaining part of the newly constructed building to other employers offering complementary services. This facility will become an anchor for additional investment in a community with a significant need for economic development and revitalization. CC’s new full-service Community Health Center will increase access to healthcare in an underserved low-income community. HRSA CDS Grant Funds will be used for the Site Preparation portion of the project (Phase 1). State funds have already been secured to cover the first stages of construction (Phase 2), and CC has engaged experts to apply for New Market Tax Credit allocations to further supplement funding for the second phase of the project in 2023. This project focuses on Clairton and surrounding areas. There is a strong need for increased access to care in this area, which today includes at least 8,100 low-income residents, only 6% of whom are currently served by Federally Qualified Health Cente
rs. It is estimated that, by 2025, the percentage of population in the area eligible for Medicaid will be 18%, up from 15.8% in 2020, while the Medicare population of residents age 65 and older is projected to increase from 21.2% in 2020 to 23.7% by 2025. African Americans, who constitute 10% of the population in the service area where the new building will be constructed, face health disparities such as a cancer incidence rate 6%greater than the overall population, a diabetes death rate 79% greater than the overall population, and an infant mortality rate nearly five times that of white babies. This new healthcare facility will increase access to affordable healthcare to a largely unserved, low-income, and aging community.
