The creation of a new rural family medicine residency program and clinic will increase the accessibility of healthcare in a chronically medically underserved region. The shortage of primary care providers, especially in rural Mississippi, is critical. Primary care physicians are increasingly needed to fill this gap. There is a need to increase primary care providers across the country, but, the need within rural Mississippi is especially acute. In Mississippi, health disparities are also significantly worse for those who have systematically faced obstacles to health due to their socio-economic status. One major factor impacting the creation and success of this program is a Family Medicine Residency Clinic. The projected visits in the clinic is 22,900 per year. This will improve community health and decrease the number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations thereby increasing the hospital’s quality of care, decreasing length of stay, increasing revenue, and strengthening program sustainability. The grant funds requested will cover the clinic construction costs as well as design fees incurred.
